Does the tense situation in Minneapolis show the danger of sanctuary cities?

The law enforcement veteran and InVest USA founder discusses what’s happening in the city, and what other local governments could potentially learn from it.

The ICE operation in Minneapolis has grown incredibly tense over the past couple of weeks. What started as a mission to remove criminal illegal immigrants from the city has now boiled over into chaos, with two people – Renee Nicole Goodand Alex Pretti – dying unnecessarily as a result.

And now comes the fallout, as President Donald Trump is talking actively with Mayor Jacob Frey about ways to keep the peace, and how to allow ICE to complete what it originally set out to do – which, honestly, local government should’ve been on top of to begin with. After all, this Somali scheme has cost local citizens billions of dollars. That’s something being missed amidst all the protests and unfortunate calls for the demise of ICE agents and police officers.

With that, Trump has begun work on legislation that would allow the end of sanctuary jurisdiction policies within certain areas – something that no doubt led Frey and Minneapolis police chief James O’Keefe to protect illegal immigrants in the first place.

In a Truth Social post, he noted that he was “calling on the United States Congress to immediately pass Legislation to END Sanctuary Cities.”

For those unfamiliar, sanctuary cities are municipalities or counties that limit cooperation with federal immigration authorities, generally refusing to detain undocumented immigrants for low-level offenses or share information with ICE. These were put in place, supposedly, to “encourage immigrant populations to report crimes without fear of deportation,” according to Google.

Which should generally be fine. But the problem is these local governments stretch the rules of sanctuary cities to protect criminals that are doing far worse than they realize.

If you take a look at the official ICE page, you’ll see that these agents aren’t just going after typical purse grabbers or shoplifters. They are going after the worst of the worst. Literally. Their list of detainees read like a lack of morality sheet, with everything from gang members that have assaulted or murdered anyone in their wake to people that would go out of their way to harm or sexually assault a child. A child.

But these local governments choose to protect people like this, believing that the sanctuary city rule should be more than effective in doing so.

That is definitely not the case.

And all you have to do is see the fallout that has come in Minneapolis. Citizens going out of their way to hinder ICE, whether it be with social media, snowballs, or more extreme actions like Good and Pretti attempted to do. What would drive them to do this? Do they believe they are “doing right” by protecting people who, in hindsight, are actually committing far worse acts than anyone could realize?

And now, with Frey, O’Keefe and Governor Tim Walz sticking to their sanctuary city rules through all of this, Trump warns it could bring more trouble. “Surprisingly, Mayor Jacob Frey just stated that, ‘Minneapolis does not, and will not, enforce Federal Immigration Laws.’ This is after having a very good conversation with him,” he noted on Truth Social.

“Could somebody in his inner sanctum please explain that this statement is a very serious violation of the Law, and that he is PLAYING WITH FIRE!”

Border czar Tom Homan is in Minneapolis, trying to work with local government on a resolution. But the truth be told, there’s only one thing that can be done. They must accept that the sanctuary city rules should not apply to the criminals ICE is going after.

And, for that matter, I can only hope other cities can learn from this as well. New York is especially notorious for its sanctuary city rules, to the point that their own New York Police Department has seen an exodus of thousands of officers as a result. How much more do you need to see before you realize just how harmful the rules can be?

Minneapolis’ government needs to step back, stop stoking the fires of protests and rage, and simply allow ICE to complete its work in arresting these dangerous criminals. Otherwise, the very sanctuary city rules they hold dear will end up being the absolute opposite. And, sadly, things could lead to the implementation of the Insurrection Act if we’re not careful.

I say again. Their citizens deserve better. Police officers deserve better. And, yes, despite what many will tell you on social media, ICE agents deserve better.
